Announcing the Sleep Cycle Calculator
A while back, I kept waking up feeling like I’d been hit by a truck — even after what seemed like a solid 7 or 8 hours. I’d set my alarm for 6:30 AM, go to bed around 11, and still drag through the morning. After some reading, I realized the problem wasn't the total sleep time, but when I was waking up relative to my sleep cycles.
Sleep runs in roughly 90-minute cycles. If your alarm goes off in the middle of deep sleep (say, 1 hour and 20 minutes into a cycle), you feel groggy and disoriented. But if you wake right at the end of a cycle, during light sleep, it’s a lot easier to get up. That's what I needed — a way to time my bedtime so that my wake-up would fall at the end of a cycle, not in the middle.
What I found (and why I built this)
There are plenty of sleep cycle calculators out there. Some of them are fine, but I wanted something that just does the math without any extra fluff. I don't need a journal, a habit tracker, or a "sleep score." I just need to know: if I have to wake up at 6:30 AM, what's the best time to fall asleep (or start winding down) so I can hit 5 or 6 full cycles?
Also, most calculators assume you fall asleep the second your head hits the pillow. I added a 14-minute buffer (the average time it takes to actually fall asleep), and I let you pick a range — maybe you can only get 4 cycles tonight, or you want a solid 6. It's honest about the trade-offs.
What the tool does
You pick your desired wake-up time (or your ideal bedtime). The calculator shows you the best sleeping times based on 90-minute cycles, including that 14-minute fall-asleep window. It gives you a few options — like "try to fall asleep at 10:16 PM for 6 cycles" — so you can decide what fits your schedule. No sign-ups, no data collection. Just the math.
Try the Sleep Cycle CalculatorIt’s a simple thing, but it’s helped me a lot. I set my alarm for 7:00 now instead of 6:30, but I actually wake up before it goes off. And the grogginess is way less — I can usually get up and make coffee without staring at the wall for 10 minutes.
